This website is about the primary age child, roughly the ages three to six, and certain objects we might give that child to use, play with and come to understand. This information can be significantly extended for ages six to nine and on, but Primary Coil begins at the beginning. The equipment described can be used in any teaching environment. It is, in particular, an extension of the Montessori primary equipment set.
The subject is Physics, the child's real physical world. The purpose is to make the subject easy to understand and explore and the equipment easy to make or buy. The purpose is also to make the case that this subject should be begun at that age, in the same way and for the same reasons that that Language, Math, Art and Music, Sensory Perception and Movement, Practical and Social skills and Cultural Awareness are taught. The information presented here enables teachers and administrators to integrate the STEM, STEAM and Maker movements their students will encounter in elementary and high school directly into their classrooms without have to create and navigate separate specialized spaces.
Primary Coil is meant to be enjoyed. There are things to do, read, watch, try. Make an Origami Balance Bird. Write a Thought. View a relevant Video.
When complete there will be seven sections of which this, Electricity and Magnetism, is the first. The next section to be written will be about Light to be followed by Sound, Motion, Heat, Chemical Reaction and Consciousness, though not necessarily in that order. After Primary Coil is complete the next project, Secondary Coil, will build the curriculum and equipment set into the early and middle elementary levels.
This website begins as a Kickstarter project. If you are here through Kickstarter, thank you. I hope you enjoy being part of the process. Have an Origami Balance Bird just for dropping by.
